The catholic church "St. Gerhardus"
|
The church "St. Gerhardus" is
the youngest of the churches in Heiligenstadt. It was built in the 20th
century in neo-baroque style.
In 1920/21 a first convent building was built, in 1925 the foundations of an enlargement and the accessory church were laid. Later the convent church became the parish church. |
Since this time it has been a part of the most striking buildings in Heiligenstadt, the "horns" on the gable became a symbol of Heiligenstadt.
There never was a real church tower. Originally a "Bavarian onion spire" was to tower above the church. Because of lack of money only the foundations was built. The construction of a dome with a chime on this foundation is planned.
There will soon be a special service for visitors with a hearing defect: "hearing loops" will be installed in some rows that will enable people with hearing aids to listen to the sermon without disturbing noises.
The church has also "written" a part of the more recent history. The demonstrations for freedom began in autumn of the year 1989 after the peace prayers on the forecourt of the church "St. Gerhardus" on Mondays.
