The sights of the town

During a stroll in Heiligenstadt you will discover:

The history of the town is alive today.

Baroque buildings and reconstructed half-timbered houses harmonize with each other. The alternation of historical and modern buildings characterizes the wellgroomed appearance of the town.

Many people don`t notice it

Heiligenstadt is a "town of churches".

This plaque in the road surface of the Wilhelmstrasse shows the "Three-Churches-View".

On these pages you can read more about the churches of Heiligenstadt:

St. Aegidien    St. Martin   St. Marien   St. Gerhardus

The old town hall

You can find the old town hall in the street Ratsgasse.

It was built in the 13th century in gothic style. In the year 1739 it was burnt down on fire.

A commemorative plaque is going to remind of the presence of Thomas Müntzer in Heiligenstadt.

It says:

Thomas Müntzer presented
the demandes of the rebels
to the town councillors
in this house
on May 3th 1525.

The two museums of the town invite guests and inhabitants:

The local museum

This museum is a former college of the Jesuits. It was built in baroque style in 1740.

You can see a lot of antique furniture, many religious art-works (cupboards, mass-robes, paintings and carvings) and exhibitions on geology, on traditions in the Eichsfeld and a collection of birds.

On top of that you can inform yourself about the history of the Eichsfeld and the town Heiligenstadt.

The museum of literature

The "Mainzer Haus", a house from the year 1436 accommodates today the museum of literature and informs about the live and work of Theodor Storm.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death on July 4th 1988 the museum was opened and the monument of Storm in front of the museum was exposed.

The church "Klauskirche"

You can find the "Klauskirche" on the "Klausberg".

There are no documents, but it was probably built around 1151.

It is probably the church in which Tilman Riemenschneider was baptized.

Today it is used for the fair of Heimenstein on the second Whitsun day.

The mill "Klausmühle"

The "Klausmühle" in the street "Klausgasse" was built in the year 1748.

Particularly fascinating is the beautiful half-timbering.

It owes its name to the closeness to the church "St. Nikolaus".

In the "Klausmühle" was born the most important citizen of Heiligenstadt, the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider.

Theodor Storm also liked to stay as a guest with the "Klausmüller".

The "Klausmühle" is still working today.

The war monument

The war monument is in the street "Lindenallee".

There used to be the market of the old part of the town on this place.

The names of the soldiers killed in action as well as the following text are engraved on several commemorative plaques:

to her courageous sons
who fought for king and fatherland
in the glorious wars
of 1864, 1866 and 1870-71
and died a heroic death
in gratitude.
the town and the district heiligenstadt.

The town hall

The town hall is right next to the market.

It was built in 1739 in baroque style.

In the building we can find the Tourist-Information and the association of tourism.

The castle

The castle of Heiligenstadt is the former domicile of the town councillor of Kurmainz.

It stands on the "Friedensplatz" ("Peace-Square").

It was built 1736-1738 in baroque style.

Here was the office of Theodor Storm in his time as judge in Heiligenstadt.

Today we can find here a part of the district department of the Eichsfeld.
