From its history:

The church "St. Martin" is a former convent church. It was built from 1304 to 1487 in gothic style.

Heinrich Heine was baptized here on June 25th 1825.

Theodor Storm was a member of this community as well. Two of his children were baptized here.

The church "St. Martin" is called the "Mother church of the Eichsfeld".

St. Martin today:

There are several active groups.

The ecumene is of particularly great importance to us and the catholic communities in the town.

There are approx. 1500 members of this community in Heiligenstadt and the matching communities.

Often exhibitions and concerts take place.

The "Burchard-year" 2000:

In the year 1000 the bishop Burchard of Worms was ordained a bishop in the church "St. Martin". At this time Heiligenstadt was an important settlement. So the main locality of the Eichsfeld was not by chance selected as ordination place.

To honour bishop Burchard and to draw attention to the history and the tradition of Heiligenstadt and the Eichsfeld was the aim of the "Burchard-year".

An interesting fact concering the live and work of Burchard is that he was ordained a bishop before there were two religions in Germany.

The famous procession on Palm Sunday on April 16th led to the church "St. Martin" on the occasion of this jubilee. With it was set a sign for the mutual respect of the both grand denominations.

The St.-Martin-relief on the northern portal represents the holy Martin as a rider. He cuts his coat in two parts with a sword to give a half to a poor man, who is crouching on the ground.
